Friendship and leisure activities are an essential part of growing up for all children and young people. Often children and young people with disabilities don't get the same opportunities to join or belong to clubs, make friends with other young people or take part in everyday leisure activities.
Friends for Leisure was set up to change this situation and help children and young people with disabilities living in the Macclesfield Borough, aged between 5-21, to have the same opportunities and access to mainstream activities as other young people.
Friends for Leisure evolved after discussions between young people with disabilities, parents and carers, Cheshire County Council Social Services, South Cheshire Health Authority and Macclesfield Council for Voluntary Service.
Between them they came up with 'Friends for Leisure'.
Friends for Leisure was established in the summer of 1995. It achieved charitable status in April 1998 and is now an independent charity.
There are many ways to get involved in Friends for Leisure such as in fundraising or becoming a volunteer friend, or helping to write or sponsor the quarterly newsletter.
We have developed a programme of education and awareness work, targeting schools and youth groups. Theses talks and workshops are aimed at raising people's awareness of disability and the rights of young people with disabilities. Please contact us for more information.
